Can You Be the Next Market Guru? Part I of this three-part series of activities explained the theory of efficient markets. Part II explained some of the key statistics that some investors use in making investment decisions. It then took you on through an interactive exercise in which you were given the option of investing in stocks or placing your money in the bank. The time period covered in that exercise went from 1920 thorough the end of World War II. Now you will be given another chance to make millions. If you are able to time the market correctly in this next exercise, you could end up with over $2 million dollars. - 4 National Financial Literacy Challenge - Student Start Page (U.S. Dept. of Treasury)
The Challenge will be offered online, and will involve questions on basic personal finance. The Challenge will take the about 40-45 minutes to complete. Students scoring in the top 25th percentile of the nation’s scores will earn a certificate of recognition from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Students scoring exceptionally well will win a 2008 National Financial Literacy Challenge Award, a medal. Receiving recognition in this national competition is prestigious and worthy of listing on a resume or college application. The Challenge is designed for students who have been exposed to financial education but any high school student at least 13 years of age may participate. In this activity one will: demonstrate an understanding of the terms associated with the stock market, demonstrate an understanding of a stock internet stock display, apply their knowledge of stock terms by making decisions completing a stock project, and research stocks on the internet.

In the activity one will: identify quality growth companies found in the Dow Jones "30", demonstrate understanding of how to chart or graph historical pricing of companies over a five-year period, demonstrate factors which tend to reduce the gains your investment made, and calculate real and nominal returns on investment.
